Montgomery County Native
with Norristown Roots
Shae Ashe was born and raised in Norristown, PA and attended public school in Norristown Area School District. He learned the value of leadership through his mother, Denise Ashe, who served at School Board Director for 12 years. After graduating Norristown Area High School in 2008, he attended Norfolk State University in Virginia where he earned his degree in Finance.
While studying finance, he developed a passion for meaningful budget reform in our public schools. In his sophomore year, Shae had the opportunity of a lifetime to intern with The Walt Disney Company in Orlando, FL. This internship led to a 5-year career with the company working for several divisions such as Walt Disney World, Disney Casting, ESPN, and Radio Disney. By 2013, a year before graduating, he was eager to return and get involved in his hometown.
The Norristown Project
Returning to Norristown in 2013 as he was completing his degree at Norfolk State University, Shae saw the need to organize community members to host cleanup projects in town. In 2013, The Norristown Project was founded with one goal: Implement Visions for a Better Community. This organization started by hosting block cleanups every weekend that summer with a handful of volunteers. These small block cleanups turned into larger quarterly cleanups including Earth Day, MLK Day of Service, and more.In 2015, The Norristown Project sought the opportunity to expand its services to the community. With the assistance of an after school program, he helped organize and develop an urban garden to expand access to healthy vegetables. This small summer project turned into a yearly operation on 1/3 acre of land, serving hundreds of families per year, at no cost to the family.
Dedication to Public Service
Elected as a Committee Person for Norristown's 1st district, Shae developed a passion for political engagement and increasing voter turnout. Volunteering for several campaigns during every election, he looked to ways he can become more involved. In 2017 he ran for School Board Director for Norristown Area School District. Working hard to reach as many voters as possible, the team he was part of (2 incumbents, and 2 newcomers) won in landslide fashion in a field that started with 11 candidates vying for 4 spots.
As School Board Director, he is a committee member of Finance-Facilities, Joint Operating (Central Montco Technical High School), and Norristown Area Education Foundation. In 2018, he was appointed by his colleagues to serve as School Board President. He is proud to serve with 8 dedicated individuals who approved a transgender policy, capital improvement projects for infrastructure improvement, and a 1:1 technology plan for 7,400 students. Shae also is no stranger to constituent services, having worked for two Members of Congress covering Montgomery, Berks, and Philadelphia Counties. He also dedicates his free time as a Youth Programs Coordinator for Montgomery County OIC.
